Welcome

Welcome to the website of Saint Patrick's Church of Ireland Cathedral, Armagh.

Our Cathedral stands in the heart of the Ecclesiastical Capital on the hilltop where it is said St Patrick built the first stone Church in 445. Nowadays there are two St Patrick's Cathedrals in Armagh and from our hill we look across to the twin spires of St Patrick's Roman Catholic Cathedral. Both Cathedrals and their staff, under the leadership of the respective Archbishops, work closely together as we share our common heritage in the steps and spirit of St Patrick. Together we aim to provide a warm welcome and friendship as we witness to the thousands of visitors who come to Armagh to view our buildings and to share something of that heritage preserved and enriched by the witness and worship of so many down the centuries of time.

There are other churches too in Armagh and together we minister to the people of this city. Armagh is also most fortunate to have many other magnificent buildings and those of us in the Anglican Cathedral have a special link with Armagh Public Library (beside the Cathedral), the Observatory, the Royal School, the old City Hospital and the former Archbishop's Palace - all built under the guidance of the former Archbishop of Armagh, Archbishop Richard Robinson in the 18th century.

Cathedrals built of ancient stones are designed for the purpose of lifting to God the hearts and minds of we who are his living stones. As the mother church in a diocese, the cathedral is a focus for those in the surrounding parishes. In St Patrick's we pride ourselves that services at which the needs of others are remembered before God are conducted daily. The Cathedral itself is open from 9am each morning and all members of the public are invited to walk around and experience something of the atmosphere of peace and calm which we hope may inspire prayer and reflection.

As we offer our prayers for those who visit the Cathedral and for all who are in any kind of need, so also we ask those who log on to this website for your prayers of encouragement for us in our efforts to maintain this wonderful legacy bequeathed by past generations. We hope that you too will have the opportunity to come and visit this hill of Armagh with its Cathedral dedicated to St Patrick.
